9/11 conspiracies: an overview

On September 11, 2001 the infamous terrorist attack occurred with symbolic targets of great importance for the United States of America and in general for the whole western world. Since the first day after the tragedy, which caused thousands of victims, many have not believed in the official reconstruction of the facts and numerous conspiracy theories have been developed in this regard.

The official reconstruction of the events is summarized as follows: on September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists linked to the "al Qaeda" group hijacked 4 airplanes in order to carry out suicide attacks; two planes hit the World Trade Center twin towers (new york city), one the Pentagon (Washington, D.C.), the fourth crashed while flying over Pennsylvania. The death toll is approximately 3000 people .

However few events have managed to catalyze the attention of the world like this, which has since been identified simply as "9/11" ; the enormous clamor, the symbolic importance of the objectives and the fact that few would have expected an attack of this kind perhaps are the elements that have pushed many to seek alternative truths through different reconstructions, often in open contrast with the information provided by the authority, up to the most bizarre and incredible theories .

The conspiracy theories that claim to explain the facts related to the 9/11 attack can usually be divided into two types:

  • Let it happen on purpose : the competent authorities knew of the attack but would have ignored this information or even facilitated the incident; these thick theories also include accusations of "insider trading" by subjects (American airlines for example) who would have shown that they were aware of the impending attack due to the intense activity on the securities involved.
  • Make it happen on purpose : the competent authorities would plan and organize the incident directly; one of the best known theories in fact claims that the Bush administration would have tried to voluntarily destabilize the world political order in order to have a plausible excuse to attack Iraq;

It should also not be forgotten that a large number of skeptics, despite not having elaborated specific theories about what happened, are convinced that the official reconstruction is not true and that the authorities have never revealed how the facts really went . In this regard, there are arguments that are very often used to deny what is reported by the authorities:

  • the collapse of the twin towers would show a dynamic more similar to that of a controlled demolition, compared to the crash of two planes;
  • the pentagon seems to have been hit by a missile;
  • the flight crashed on Pennsylvania (United Airlines Flight 93) apparently would have been shot down by a fighter of the U.S.Army;
  • it does not seem credible (in contrast to the previous hypothesis) that none of the 4 hijacked planes has not been intercepted by the American military aviation;
  • it seems impossible that a terrorist - non-professional pilot - managed to complete the complicated maneuver necessary to carry out the attack on the pentagon, one of the best defended military bases in the united states.

The conspiracy theories are many and in fact the unclear details are many, even years later; the summary is one: the truth about the 9/11 attack for many is not the official one and will never be revealed publicly, probably because of the enormous interests and balances (economic, political, social) that such an event can cause on the world population.
What is certain is that the events of 9/11 will go down in history, as will the doubts and perplexities of many people.

“g in downtown Manhattan. [...]Before the World Trade Center it was the tallest. Then when the built the World Trade Center it become known as the second-tallest, and now it’s the tallest.”
-Donald J. Trump
