The Nephilim

The fallen angels

According to some apocryphals of the Old Testament (the book of Enoch and the book of Jubilees), the Grigori (also known as the Watchers) would be a group of fallen angels: in Hebrew they are called Irin and are mentioned in the 4th book of Daniel and in some traditions of Italian witchcraft it is said that they descend from an ancient star-born people.

The Giants

Biblically speaking, these angels, who were wonderful, tall, and very good looking, would mate with the daughters of men, generating a breed of hybrids called "Nephilim" translated as "giants" in Genesis and Numbers or "fallen heroes from centuries" (Ezechiel).

The origin of the word "Nephilim" is controversial: the most widespread theory is that the name derives from "nephil" which literally means "giants", many researchers, however, argue that the root "nephil" refers to the constellation of Orion: the term "nephilim" would then be the plural of "nephila".

Those that have fallen

A third "faction" led by the American theologian Charles Calddweel Ryrie, believes that the Etymological root is "falling" from the Semitic word "Naphal", so yet another translation could be "those that have fallen".

Other theories

Moreover, some exegetes, considering blasphemous the idea of the mating between angels and humans, suggested the idea that they were a progeny of people possessed by demons. In the light of modern evidences about abduction stories, the hypothesis that the Nephilim were the result of artificial insemination and genetic manipulation by aliens has also emerged.

Migrating in a "para-historical" context the Nephilim were associated with the population of Atlantis, which some claim to be in contact or even descended from extraterrestrials (see also The Nordic Aliens).

In their books, Zecharia Sitchin and Erich Von Daniken described the Nephilim as our ancestors: the modern human being was therefore created with genetic engineering by a race of evolved aliens (See also Anunnaki).

Also David Icke proposes a similar theory: some interdimensional beings of Reptilian race, using genetic engineering, gave birth to a progeny with particular physical traits (high stature, fair skin...) and prone to any form of hypnotic suggestion (which in his opinion occurs when the "demons" possess their progeny and claim fidelity) and believes that this line of blood has been in control of the world since the days of the Sumerians until today (see also Babylonian Brotherhood).

“There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bore children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.” -Sylvain Neuvel, Sleeping Giants
